Command Philosophy
LEAD, FOLLOW or GET OUT OF THE WAY – (Thomas Paine, The American Crisis, No. 1, December 19, 1776) Get the Mission Accomplished:
 Permanent Personnel –Impart your knowledge and experience to your students. Lead aggressively and don’t settle for anything less than 100% from the Marines you mentor and teach.

 Students –The Marine Corps is counting on you. Learn your job. Strive to become subject matter experts in your field. This is your chance to hone your skills in a school environment before being called upon in combat. I expect you to put forth a 100% effort at all times.

Take Care of your People: This applies equally to every one of us. Know your people and treat them right. Lead with a positive attitude and be an active, positive influence in all aspects of your Marines and Civilian Marines lives. Know how they live, and ensure that they are set up to succeed both on and off the job.

Uphold the Standards: This is implied in the first two bullets above, but it warrants reinforcing. Do the right thing and don’t tolerate those who don’t. If someone is wrong, make the correction.

Statement on Equal Opportunity: Discrimination and sexual harassment will not be tolerated in any form . All members of this Command will be treated with dignity and respect, without regard to age, color, gender, race, religion, national origin or sexual orientation. All leaders within this command will foster an atmosphere that ensures the impartial, fair, and unbiased treatment of all personnel. I require that suspected violations of this policy be promptly reported to me via the chain of command. Each report will be thoroughly investigated. Substantiated violations will be punished in accordance with the Uniformed Code of Military Justice. Trained Equal Opportunity representatives are assigned at the command and company level. (Ref: MCO P5354.1)

Statement on Sexual Assault: Sexual assault is an abhorrent crime. It is anathema to all we stand for as Marines and it represents a malignant cancer within our Marine Corps. Within this Command, all suspected sexual assaults will be promptly and thoroughly investigated. Perpetrators can expect to be punished to the fullest extent of the Uniformed Code of Military Justice and forfeit any claim to the title of Marine. Victims will receive prompt support and proper care via the chain of command and the trained Uniformed Victim Advocates (UVA’s) assigned at the Command and Company level. UVA’s are trained and assigned to assist sexual assault victims and are bound by law to maintain confidentiality. Victims, witnesses and anyone with knowledge of a sexual assault are encouraged to contact a UVA as soon as possible. (Ref: MCO 1752.5)

Statement on Hazing: Upon receiving our Eagle, Globe and Anchor, each and every one of us was fully initiated into the Marine Corps with full, lifetime privileges. Hazing, in all its degrees and forms will not be tolerated. Hazing is defined as any conduct whereby one military member causes another military member to suffer or be exposed to an activity which is cruel, abusive, humiliating or oppressive. Hazing destroys unit cohesion and combat readiness. I require that suspected violations of this policy be promptly reported to me via the chain of command. Each report will be thoroughly investigated. Substantiated violations will be punished in accordance with the Uniformed Code of Military Justice. (Ref: MCO 1700.28)

Statement on Safety: Nothing we do off of the battlefield warrants taking risks that could get someone hurt. By taking the time to apply basic common sense and operational risk management (ORM), we can prevent nearly all work related injuries. The employment of ORM to our training and operations here at LOS is mandatory. The proper use of all safety equipment, and strict adherence to all safety policies and regulations is critical to keeping our personnel safe, and combat ready. At no time, will this Command accept short cuts when it comes to safety. (Ref: MCO 5100.29)

Statement on Suicide Prevention: There are few things that rip the heart out of a family or a unit like a suicide in the ranks. All too often they leave us to wonder why we couldn’t recognize the signs in time and step in to help. Recognizing the signs requires knowing each other well enough to know when something isn’t right. Stepping in to help requires having the moral courage to engage in another persons life, even when it might have negative effects for either of you. We can’t allow another one of our own to fall victim to this terrible killer.
